Gabriel's Voice, On His Own Terms

Autism Acceptance Month asks us to move beyond awareness alone. It centers acceptance by recognizing autistic individuals for who they are and valuing diverse ways of connecting, communicating, and experiencing the world. This month, we're proud to share about Gabriel. His story is one of growth, self-expression, and how AAC has expanded the ways he communicates.

Gabriel is a 32-year-old AAC user whose life has opened up in meaningful and personal ways. His journey is not about changing who he is or “fixing” communication, it’s about supporting his right to be heard, understood, and known, in his own way.

A new chapter begins

In August of last year, Gabriel moved in with his brother, Uriel, marking a big transition in his life. While this change came with new opportunities, it also brought communication challenges. Everyday interactions such as expressing needs, sharing thoughts, or simply joining conversations, required more effort and often left Gabriel feeling less confident and less included.

Before the move, Gabriel had lived comfortably with his father. Over the years, they developed a communication style that worked well for them both. Still, Gabriel’s father knew that for Gabriel to build independence and connect with people beyond the home, additional communication support would be important for his future.

With the support of his family and care team, Gabriel began exploring new ways to communicate more broadly with the people around him. From the beginning, it was clear that something meaningful was happening. As Gabriel grew more comfortable using his communication system, he began sharing more. More thoughts, more questions, more of himself.

Uriel noticed the change quickly. Gabriel wasn’t just communicating more often; he was communicating more confidently and more authentically, in a way that reflected his personality.

Communication that goes beyond words

What Gabriel gained wasn’t simply a new way to communicate. It was access to participation and moments of connect that had previously seemed out of reach.

Now, Gabriel asks questions, shares observations, and keeps track of details that help him make sense of the world around him. With time and repetition, he has built clarity and confidence, showing persistence and pride in his progress.

Gabriel’s growth reaches far beyond functional communication. His personality shines through in every interaction. He has become more outgoing and engaged, finding joy in connecting with others and even cracking jokes that bring smiles to those around him. Through these moments, Uriel learned that he and Gabriel share a mutual love for scary movies, a discovery that deepened their bond and strengthened their relationship.

For Gabriel, communication isn’t just about being understood. It’s about being known for who he is.

Growth through support and self-determination

Gabriel’s journey reminds us that communication success is deeply personal and supported by community. His progress reflects not only the encouragement of family and professionals but also his own determination, curiosity, and willingness to try something new.

With each interaction, Gabriel continues to build skills and confidence. He is making choices, expressing preferences, and participating more fully in daily life.

Most importantly, Gabriel is showing what can happen when someone is given the space, respect, and resources to communicate in a way that feels natural to them.

Honoring Autism Acceptance Month

Gabriel’s story is a beautiful reflection of what Autism Acceptance truly means. It reminds us that communication looks different for everyone and affirming that autistic individuals deserve access to tools and support that honor their identity and autonomy.

We are grateful to the family, care team, and community members who continue to support Gabriel as he grows. It has been a privilege to witness his confidence, independence, and joy as he continues to discover new ways to express himself.

This month, and always, we celebrate voices like Gabriel’s that remind us that acceptance begins with listening.
