Samuel is a 17-year-old AAC user from the UK who is passionate about helping others understand what good communication support can look like in the classroom.
Drawing on his own experiences at school, Samuel shares his top tips for teachers – from giving students time to communicate to recognizing the importance of patience, respect and inclusion. His reflections are a valuable reminder that small changes can make a big difference to creating a more inclusive classroom for everyone.
Give all students a chance in the classroom
Giving all students access to communication resources gives everyone the chance to learn to communicate and show us what they can achieve. People can communicate in different ways, and it doesn’t matter how people communicate. However, it does matter if people haven’t had any opportunities to talk.
Give students like me time
It takes time to get ready, answer, and find the words we want to use. Please be patient with people like me!
Have the same resources available every day and where possible, everywhere
It is important that the same symbols are used, and resources are consistent. Availability also needs to be predictable. Consistency ensures students always feel safe, included and heard.
Just because I am not speaking, it doesn’t mean I don’t have anything to say
Often, as the quiet student in the classroom, I can feel forgotten and like I’m not given the same opportunities to participate. Always think about opportunities to include all students with communication needs.
Use the opportunity to learn about the technology from someone who is able to first
This includes specialists and other professionals. Also consider that the expert is often the student who uses it. Don’t forget about the support available from Smartbox and the training resources available on Smartbox Academy to support Grid for Schools.
Ensure the tools the students need for their communication go with them, wherever they go
This could include paper-based visual resources, communication books and boards, or maybe portable technology like an iPad or personal AAC device.
